A Special Place For Kitty

Hi, this is NALA.  I'm a CAT!!

The statistics tell us that every two seconds an animal is euthanized in the U.S.  75% are CATS.

I want to tell you about a very special place in Sarasota, Florida that rescued 1,000 homeless cats and kittens in 2012 and found homes for 896 of them.  Their goal for 2013 is to find homes for 1000.

I’m so proud of the CAT DEPOT.  Here it is, right in the city where I live.  A place where cats wait in “state-of-the-art” comfort for someone to adopt them.

I was a lost, abandoned cat in Orlando.  I was fostered by my new Mom’s daughter for two weeks, until I came to live in Sarasota with my new family.  I’m a very lucky kitty to be loved and cared for by my special Mom and Dad.  I’m a happy cat!!

CAT DEPOT was founded  by Mr. Ken Slavin.  He was on a mission to find a home for a stray cat that wandered into his yard.   In 2003, he brought his dream to life.  He formed a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which is recognized for its progressive design and dedication to helping homeless, abandoned and injured cats.

The no-kill feline rescue organization has a 10,000 square-foot “green” facility that is home to more than 125 adoptable cats and kittens, on any given day.

It  has a surgical center and an activity and education center.  More than 19 veterinarians volunteer their services to CAT DEPOT.  More than 1,400 volunteers give their time to the CAT DEPOT.

The volunteers give lots of love and care to all the kittens and cats.  Sometimes, they will take them for walks on leashes.

Since it’s in Florida, the facility is built to withstand hurricane force winds of up to 165 mph.  In case the cats ever need to be evacuated, they have a 24 foot emergency response rescue trailer.

The CAT DEPOT is incredible!  Cats roam freely in their own spacious pods.  There are pods for adult cats and kittens.  There are even pods for cats that are a little chubby and have to be fed  special diet food.

CAT DEPOT is one of only 30 participants in the 2013 AMERICAN HUMANE ASSOCIATION CAT HEALTH and WELFARE FORUM.   That’s something to be very proud of!!

OPERATION RED, WHITE and MEW allows immediate acceptance of cats from deployed military personnel.
